Activision CEO Bobby Kotick made an important announcement, or a slight slip of the tongue, concerning about their DJ rhythm game franchise. This therefore confirmed a rumor that has been going on for quite some time with regards to the sequel to DJ Hero.
Kotick said in the interview, “I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can't wait for you to see next year's.” Despite the fact that the said interview is slated to appear in the February issue of a gaming publication, it is unclear whether the comment was made during 2009 or 2010.
Many were surprised about the news of a sequel to DJ Hero though, given that there are already quite a few rhythm games in the market today. But FreeStyleGames and Activision has high hopes for the franchise, which included renowned artists Daft Punk, Cut Chemist, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Grandmaster Flash, and the late DJ AM in its lineup. But this was not enough though to surge the sales for the game as it managed to generate only as much as 175,000 copies sold in the US. One reason that critics identified to the game's poor sales is its expensive price tag of $120.
But apparently, the sales for the original DJ Hero game did not deter Kotick and all other personnels at Activision to stop making a new iteration for the franchise. He declares, “We're sticking with it, [w]e'll stick with and get it right. It's going to be less games, better games. That's our strategy.”
