The 8001050F error that hit Sony PlayStation 3 consoles yesterday resolved itself as midnight passed within the GMT timezone.
Millions of gamers on older models of the PS3 were forced to stop play when a clock functionality error reset the date on the machines to January 1 2000, blocking access to games with Trophies and PlayStation Network (PSN) downloads.
Sony subsequently announced that the glitch, which was related to a leap year miscalculation, would resolve itself within 24 hours.
"We are aware that the internal clock functionality in the PS3 units other than the slim model recognised the year 2010 as a leap year,” spokesman Patrick Seybold said on the PlayStation blog.
"Having the internal clock date change from February 29 to March 1 - both GMT - we have verified that the symptoms are now resolved and that users are able to use their PS3 normally."
The problem has already been compared to the millennium bug, otherwise known as the Y2K bug, which was predicted to cause a global computer meltdown but saw few problems actually arise when clocks changed at the end of the millennium.
